Although it is a short term, it is certainly a busy one! There has been plenty happening across the school, academically, in sport, the arts, and cultural activities. 

Currently our students are well into our school wide theme of Social Justice. Our (student-friendly) simple definition of the concept is: Social justice is… the fair distribution of resources, opportunities, and privileges across a society. We hope by the end of this theme our Students will understand that:

Teaching teams have had some great guest speakers, some have been to Te Papa and many interesting aspects of our country’s history are being studied. Please talk to your child about what work they have been doing.

We hope our families enjoy the King’s Birthday weekend – a chance to catch a breath before we dive into the second half of Term 2. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our school and students.

And finally a huge congratulations to our cross country team who placed third at the regional competition – an impressive result.

We are celebrating Samoa Language week next week.

We will be learning some Samoan phrases and the Poly group will be performing in assembly on Wednesday.

If your child would like to wear an ie lavalava over the top of their school uniform they can.

The Pasifika group can wear their traditional Samoan clothes (puletasi or lavalava) on Wednesday and will be having a shared lunch together. If your child is in the Poly practice group or is a Pasifika leader they can bring a plate to share for lunch on Wednesday and drop it off to the art room before school. The school will be getting some panikeke for us to share.

We have been collecting cans of food to donate to the Lower Hutt Foodbank to empower our students to contribute toward addressing social justice issues.

If you can donate a can of food please give to your student to bring along to school by this Friday.

Congratulations to over 130 students who attended the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge last week at Camp Wainui. It was a fantastic day with everyone having a fabulous time running, crawling, climbing and getting dirty.

Thank you so much to all the parent helpers and teachers that helped out on the day. Your support is invaluable and we really appreciate you giving up your time to support all our students.

Congratulations to the team that went to the Nairnville 7’s tournament last Thursday. By all accounts it was a brilliant day making it through to the finals against Wainuiomata. There was some great skill and sportsmanship on display throughout the day. Thank you to our parent helpers and those that came along to support the team. We really appreciate your support throughout the day.

WRISSA Cross Country

On Wednesday, a group of 35 students went to represent Hutt Intermediate at the WRISSA Cross Country at Harcourt Park. The weather held off but it was slippery underfoot and there was a high level of competition throughout the day. All our students ran extremely well and they all should be very proud of themselves. Congratulations to the following students who placed in the top 15.

Thank you to our amazing parent helpers for their help with the team throughout the day. Your time and support is greatly appreciated. It was also fantastic to see so many other parents coming throughout the day to support our students. It is always fantastic to have this extra support. Thank you.

There is currently a sign up sheet on the sports notice board for anyone who wants to play basketball in Term 3 who isn’t already playing.   Next week an email will be sent out to those already signed up from Term 2 and our new sign ups. A google form will need to be completed for your child to be put into the team for Term 3. We will endeavour to keep the teams the same, however some teams may need to be changed slightly.

Last week the students had the opportunity to sign up for the chance to play in a Flag Football Tournament on Tuesday 17th June. Mr McJorrow will be organising the teams so students need to ensure they are listening to or reading the daily bulletin for more information. Once the teams have been selected then information will be emailed out to families. We will need a number of parents to help support our teams on the day.

Last week the students had the opportunity to sign up for the chance to play in the WRISSA under 60kg 15’s Rugby Tournament. Mr Matheson and Mr Ladbrook will be organising the team. Students will need to ensure they are listening to or reading the daily bulletin for more information. Once the teams have been selected then information will be emailed out to families.

Thank you to everyone who attended our meeting on Thursday 15 May. It was great to hear ideas and begin discussions to help with getting our kids to school when, for a variety of reasons, it is tough. There are no easy answers but it was great to share information, experiences and suggestions from the range of people who attended.

We will be having our next meeting on Thursday 12 June in our school library from 5 - 6pm. We will also be opening this up to our school community again.

-          A brief recap of the previous session (with printouts of the slides for those who want them/weren’t there)

-          A discussion about neurodiversity and difficulties getting to school

-          A  question and and answer session with an opportunity to share ideas over a cup of tea and a snack

Our public health nurses are coming to school in the week starting 2 June to provide immunisation for Year 7 tamariki.

THE SCHOOL DAY 

The School day commences at 8.55am and finishes at 3.00pm. Punctuality is important. Students are required to bring their PE gear to school every day. 

ABSENCE OR LATE FOR SCHOOL PHONE LINE  

Please remember to notify school before 9.00am if your child will not be at school for all or part of the day. You can do this via our website or by calling our absence line PH: 570 3101. This reduces the lengthy process of contacting you to check on absences. We use an electronic absence notification system, which means you will be initially contacted via text message and/or email when your child is away and no notification has been received. 

Students arriving late for school must sign in using Vistab on arrival before going to class. This is located at the main office.
