Welcome to Hutt Intermediate. We hope you have all had a lovely holiday.
An especially warm welcome to our new tamariki and whānau, we hope your two years with us is a mutually enjoyable and successful time. To those of you who have an already established connection with us, welcome back. We look forward to continuing our association with you all.
I have been principal here at Hutt Intermediate for 17 years and I absolutely love my work. Every day I am privileged to work with our wonderful community, great tamariki and our fantastic, hardworking staff. This is my dream job.
Intermediate schools are vibrant and busy places. There is always something happening or something about to happen. We do our very best to provide a range of academic, sporting and cultural opportunities for everyone. With this in mind, please keep an eye on our newsletter and website for information as to what is happening at school.
If you are coming by our school office, please do not hesitate to introduce yourself to me.

I am one of the Deputy Principals here at Hutt Intermediate. I have been in this position for the last 11 years so I have seen many families go through the school and always look forward to continuing these relationships as siblings and cousins arrive at the start of the year. It is also wonderful getting to know new families beginning their time with us. I always say to people we have the best students and best staff - and I genuinely mean it. My role is quite diverse including assessment, reporting, curriculum delivery and helping students so they can get the most out of their time here with us.

I am a Deputy Principal here at Hutt Intermediate. I have taught at a number of schools both in New Zealand and overseas and am now seeing the children of children I taught coming through the doors. Scary how time flies! This is my 11th year at Hutt Intermediate. I feel very lucky to work at a school where our tamariki, whānau and staff work so well together to make it a fun, active, engaging and safe learning environment. As a member of the senior leadership team, I work very closely with Mike and Catriona to ensure that we bring our school vision to life. I look forward to meeting you at some of the many events we have coming up, but please note I have a terrible memory for names!
Kia ora koutou
Welcome to our first school newsletter for 2025. The newsletter will be posted on our website fortnightly and sent out via school-links. Our student daily bulletin is also posted on our website and is a great way to keep up to date with what is happening around the school.
Inquiry learning at Hutt Intermediate is based on a thematic approach and we make links to other areas of the curriculum such as maths and literacy, where they are relevant . This year our themes are Tūrangawaewae, Social Justice, Innovation and Design.
This term our school wide theme is Tūrangawaewae.
Within this theme we will be exploring with our tamariki the following questions:
- What is tūrangawaewae?
- What makes me unique?
- What is identity?
- What is my tūrangawaewae?
- What does a community need to thrive?
- How can people be both similar to—and different from—each other?
- What do communities need to agree on, and on what can they disagree?
- What does it mean to be a part of a group/community, and why is it valuable?
- How do our relationships with family and friends contribute to our well-being?
Each team will be sending out information over the next few weeks with more detail on their approach to this theme. This term we will be setting up team pages on our school website which will be a great way for you to follow the learning going on in your child’s class.
We look forward to seeing you all at our Whānau Picnic on Wednesday 5 February from 5:30 - 7.00pm.
Nga mihi
Mike, Catriona and Tracey
