Welcome to Hutt Intermediate. We hope you have all had a lovely holiday and have managed to enjoy our fine summer.
An especially warm welcome to our new tamariki and whānau, we hope your two years with us is a mutually enjoyable and successful time. To those of you who have an already established connection with us, welcome back. We look forward to continuing our association with you all.
I have been principal here at Hutt Intermediate for 16 years and I absolutely love my work. Everyday I am privileged to work with our wonderful community, great tamariki and our fantastic, hardworking staff. This is my dream job.
Intermediates are vibrant and busy places. There is always something happening or something about to happen. We do our very best to provide a range of academic, sporting and cultural opportunities for everyone. With this in mind please keep an eye on our newsletter and website for information as to what is happening at school.
If you are coming by our school office please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to me.

I am one of the Deputy Principals here at Hutt Intermediate. I have been in this position for the last 11 years so I have seen many families go through the school and always look forward to continuing these relationships as siblings and cousins arrive at the start of the year. It is also wonderful getting to know new families beginning their time with us. I always say to people we have the best students and best staff - and I genuinely mean it. My role is quite diverse including assessment, reporting, curriculum delivery and helping students so they can get the most out of their time here with us.

I am a Deputy Principal here at Hutt Intermediate. I have taught at a number of schools both in New Zealand and overseas and am now seeing the children of children I taught coming through the doors. Scary how time flies! 2024 is my 10th year at HIS. I feel very lucky to work at a school where our tamariki, whanau and staff work so well together to make it a fun, active, engaging and safe learning environment. As a member of the senior leadership team I work very closely with Mike and Catriona to ensure that we bring our school vision to life.
Kia ora koutou
Welcome to our first school newsletter for 2024. The newsletter will be posted on our website fortnightly and sent out via school-links. Our student daily bulletin is also posted on our website and is a great way to keep up to date with what is happening around the school.
Our staff have been back since last Wednesday meeting and engaging in our ongoing professional development around our local curriculum and our teaching and learning framework. This process was started in 2021 and has involved many hours of professional development with Mark Osborne, a highly skilled facilitator. This term our school wide theme is Whanaungatanga - a feeling of connection and belonging with others. Within this theme we will be exploring with our tamariki the following questions:
- What does it mean to be a part of a group/community, and why is it valuable?
- How do our relationships with family and friends contribute to our well-being?
Each team will be sending out information over the next few weeks with more detail on their approach to this theme. This term we will be setting up team web pages which will be a great way for you to follow the learning going on in your child’s class.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at school on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Meet the Teacher meetings. A good relationship with your child’s classroom teacher is vital as they are your main point of contact at the school. Emailing them with any questions or concerns is usually the best way of communicating. If required, they can set up a time to call you or meet to discuss any issues. Occasionally issues of a more serious nature arise and the team leader or one of the Deputy Principals will help resolve the situation.
One of our events early in the year is our Education outside the Classroom programme. Notices will be coming home for Year 8 camp and Year 7 day trips. Obviously we need parent help for these trips to go ahead so please keep an eye out for notices and if you can help we would be most grateful.
We look forward to the fine weather continuing and giving us a great start to 2024.
Nga mihi
Mike, Catriona and Tracey
